Slower & Steadier Wins The Race

Hi Everyone,
On behalf of Natalia, Martin and family, thank you for your continued support while Natalia continues to recover at Toronto General Hospital. Since the last update on Monday progress has been made for her on some fronts, less so on others, with the key theme being slower and steadier wins the race.

Natalia’s awareness and overall strength continues to improve which is key. After a few tries, she has been able to stand up and walk a short distance on several occassions with assistance. Intensive physiotherapy continues and is helping her body and movement improve.

She hasn’t been able to speak yet, but a new tracheostomy tube is going to be used tomorrow which should allow her to start talking and will be a large step forward (the trach itself likely won’t be required much longer).

Medical staff performed a bronchoscopy today (described in an earlier post: a bronchoscope is a flexible metal tube with a camera and suction that is inserted down into the lungs) and have detected quite a few secretions. Additionally, her white blood cell count has increased since the last update and is higher than ideal. This doesn’t suggest organ rejection as much as it strongly indicates an infection, so doctors will be putting her on a new course of antibiotics which will hopefully take care of it in short order.

Unfortunately, there are indications that Natalia may have to remain at TGH for all of December, but that hasn’t been completely determined yet. As you’ve likely detected over the course of following Natalia’s journey, variables change all the time which can be for the good and sometimes for the bad. The most important thing is she is on an upward trend of improvement...there are just a few bumps which, all things considered, were to be expected.

As you know, where Natalia has been battling back from is a place that hopefully none of us will ever have to experience and a place from which most people, quite frankly, wouldn’t have survived. Natalia has a spirit and will and determination to live and be a loving daughter, and sister, and friend, and aunt, and wife, and Mom to baby Scarlett that really does defy description. It’s inspiring. It’s motivating. And it puts everything we tend to complain about and take for granted into perspective. As much as I’ve tried to put recent weeks into words on her behalf...a lot of what she’s been through...and the totality of what she’s been through...well...there just aren’t.

The intention of this particular blog update isn’t to have a negative tone, but as mentioned in my first blog post, Natalia wants to provide candidness without any sugar coating.

This is still a hard time for her. A different kind of hard, because she is of course on the other side of the transplant now so it’s all about the pace at which she gets better, rather than before when it was all about the speed at which she was getting worse.

Progress will continue to be made. The course of events and the lifeline that became available when the call came with her new lungs just 12 days ago is astounding. But it is still a hard road.

The aforementioned “totality” and culmination of what she has been through takes a toll physically and psychologically. But, as we all know, Natagladiator is an Olympic fighter and be it for Christmas or just into the New Year, she will be home soon where her new chapter and lease on life awaits.

Myles

So glad to hear she's making progress, even if it's the slow and steady kind...all progress, not matter how small, is a major accomplishment.
Sending lots of good vibes and hope every day is just a little bit better.
How's Scarlett doing? She must be getting big!

Natalia is a fighter and determined. It is great to hear that she is making progress, but it's better to go slow and steady than try to go 60 right out of the chute. She has gone through some major things and has reached some major milestones in such a short period of time since the transplant. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with all of you.

Few understand the way Natalia has been snatched from death unto life. We continue to pray for her recovery and know that her present state shows that time alone will dictate the rate of return to full health and strength.

Good report, Myles. Thank you for telling us what we need to know. We can pray with clearer direction because you so kindly keep us up to date. Praying for all generations of Natalia's marvelous family and community.

Christ's birthday story from Luke 1:77-79:

"You will tell His people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. All this will be because the mercy of our God is very tender and heaven's dawn is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and death's shadow and to guide us to the path of peace."

Light of Heaven, shine on us and guide us on the path of peace, strength and health. Most of all, keep us in the flow of Your great love. Praise You for the breath of Your eternal life-giving Spirit. Please touch Natalia so sweetly and give her comfort and peace even as she fights her good fight.

Joy to the world!

Thank you for the honest updates. What an incredible story. It certainly puts all the craziness and stress of the holiday season in perspective. To have time to hug and hold the ones you love is the biggest blessing and gift of all.

Long life and love to all of you

After such major surgery - a few bumps have to be expected. Nat - it doesn't matter if you are home for Christmas this year cause I know that your family will be with you. What's important is how you are going to be feeling NEXT Christmas. You are going to be chasing Scarlett around the tree and participating in all of the hustle and bustle that you so greatly wished that you can take part in. Take your time. Heal well and as always you are in my thoughts.

I am so proud of you!

Nat your doing so amazing, good days, bad days, you continue to inspire me. It really doesn't matter if you make it home for xmas, Scarlett herself won't even understand Christmas this year and Christmas can very well be right beside your hospital bed if that's what you all decide.

What's important is you continue to get better, slow is good, it's like running a marathon, one foot in front of the other. Sometimes you gotta walk, and sometimes you can jog and sometimes you go full out and run, so long as you head toward your goal line.

You can do this, and I'm thinking of you all the time!

"The LORD will keep you from all harm--He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." Psalm 121: 7-8

I'm "holding your hand" from afar and joining in the prayers of your family. The photo of Martin, eyes closed, head bowed, his left hand on your head and his right hand holding yours is beautiful. You're in good hands!

And Scarlett?! You couldn't have shared a lovelier picture of a more adorable baby girl! (Nov. 25 post's link to TO Star article.)I hope you get to look into those precious sparkling eyes very very soon!

Myles this post brought tears to my eyes.

Nat, I know you have been through so much. More than any person should really have to endure. You're strength is truly amazing.
But I know this has not been easy.
You continue to be in my prayers, thoughts and heart!!
Sending you all the best vibes possible! xo

Natalia,
I know I already posted on this update, but I just wanted to let you know that it doesn't matter if you are home for this Christmas this year because even if you aren't you will be home soon enough and you have your family surrounding you and you have already gotten the best Christmas present you and your family could ask for even if it was early. You have new lungs! You have a chance to see many more Christmases and be home and being a part of the usual hustle and bustle of it all next year in your own home with Scarlett and Martin and your family. Just try to relax and let your body heal. You are the most important right now and your family will be wherever you are. You are truly a miracle! You have touched many people.
